Vaginal Atrophy
Definition Vaginal Atrophy (sometimes known as Atrophic vaginitis) is an uncomfortable or possibly painful condition caused by hormone-related vaginal dryness and the thinning and shrinking of vaginal tissues. The resulting dryness can make sexual relations painful and may diminish the desire for intimacy. The risk of vaginal infections (vaginitis) increases if you experience vaginal atrophy, and the change in the acidic environment of the vagina can make you more likely to experience reoccurring infection with bacteria, yeast or other organisms. Some form of this condition effect more than 40% of post-menopausal women.
Symptoms Genital symptoms include dryness, itching, burning, irritation, pressure, white discharge, malodorous discharge due to infection, painful sexual intercourse, and possible bleeding after intercourse. In addition, sores and cracks may occur which may make infection more prevalent. It can be a cause of Postmenopausal bleeding (PMB) or spotting that is sometimes interpreted as menstrual spotting.
Causes of Vaginal Atrophy The most common cause of vaginal atrophy is the normal decrease in estrogen as a result of menopause. Other causes of decreased estrogen levels are decreased ovarian functioning due to radiation therapy or chemotherapy, immune disorder, removal of the ovaries, after pregnancy, during lactation. Vaginal Atrophy can also be a side effect of various medications: (Tamoxifen (Nolvadex), Danazol (Danocrine), Medroxyprogesterone (Provera), Leuprolide (Lupron), Nafarelin (Synarel)). Treatment Alternatives Once the causes of Vaginal Atrophy have been identified, treatment usually involves some kind of estrogen replacement. Topical estrogen creams and gels, moisturizers and lubricants may be prescribed by a physician. As many of the symptoms mimic other conditions, it is wise to consult a physician to obtain a proper diagnosis before treating with over the counter medications.
When to see a doctor If you are experiencing one or more of the symptoms listed above, make a note of them and schedule a visit that includes time for a pap test and urinalysis, as many of these symptoms are also indicative of one or more health conditions.
