Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence (UI) is any involuntary leakage of urine. It is a common and distressing problem, which may have a profound impact on quality of life. Urinary incontinence may be the result of an underlying chronic medical problem or result from pelvic relaxation especially following childbirth. It may be stress related and provoked by actions such as coughing or sneezing or occur with an uncontrollable and unpredictable bladder contraction. The cornerstone of therapy is a proper evaluation usually requiring bladder testing or urodynamics to determine the appropriate medical or surgical therapy needed. Other conditions including infection, tumors and some neurological diseases must be ruled out. If appropriate surgery to correct anatomic problems is performed. Many medical therapies involve either relaxing the bladder muscle and/or strengthening the sphincter or area where the urethra and bladder meet. Other approaches involving bladder training, Kegel exercises and biofeedback are also very effective but require time, diligence and self discipline and some guidance which is often the reason for their failure. If you are suffering from incontinence it is important that you talk to your doctor. Many patients are too embarassed by this condition and endure for years this embarrassing but correctable problem.
