What is Male Infertility?

Infertility is the inability to conceive after at least one year of unprotected intercourse. Male infertility is a factor in about half of these cases.

Causes of Male Infertility

A number of conditions and factors can cause problems with sperm that can result in male infertility. Common causes include impaired sperm production, function or delivery, and a deficiency of the male hormone, testosterone. Certain diseases such as cystic fibrosis or cancer and its treatment can result in infertility. Also, health and lifestyle play a role in which obesity, drugs, alcohol and stress all can be culprits.

Treatment varies based on a number of factors and commonly includes any of the following: surgery, hormones, medication and/or counseling, or assisted reproduction, such as in vitro fertilization.
