Heavy menstrual bleeding
Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) or heavy periods is a condition characterized by actual or perceived excessive blood loss during the menses. It often results in fatigue and tiredness caused from anemia and frequently interferes with work, school or family time due to the constant need to change pads or the accompanying discomfort from uterine cramping. Many women remain at home during the first few days of their period and often schedule their lives around this compromising week of their life. The period itself may be heavy and/or the duration may exceed 7 days. In younger women, especially those that have had heavy periods since menarche, underlying bleeding disorders may be revealed during the initial evaluation. Other causes include uterine polyps, fibroids, ovulation problems and hormonal imbalance. Your health care provider will recommend further evaluation following a complete physical and pelvic exam with pap smear that may include ultrasound, hysteroscopy and blood work. Treatment centers on discovering the cause of the bleeding and may involve hormonal or surgical correction depending on age and fertility desires. Any bleeding in the menopause should immediately be evaluated and include a pap smear and biopsy of the uterine lining.
