Birth control Definition Birth control or contraception allows a woman or man to have control of their fertility. Contraception has evolved to include many different therapies and drug delivery systems allowing for individual lifestyle choices. Birth control is usually separated into two main types: reversible or permanent. Types of Contraception Reversible contraception includes those medications or devices that interfere with conception by either preventing ovulation (the release of an egg), presenting a barrier to sperm fertilizing egg (condoms, diaphragms) or creating a hostile environment to fertilization (IUDs). Pills, patches and vaginal rings all work by preventing the release of an egg and involve release of hormones. There is presently one injectable hormone preparation and one skin implant approved by the FDA. These slowly release hormones over time. Permanent contraception includes vasectomy, tubal ligation and Essure, a device that is implanted thru the vagina using a hysteroscope in the doctors’ office. Your health care provider can provide additional information on these forms of contraception. Reasons for Contraception Choices There are times when an unplanned pregnancy would seriously affect the future of a woman's health or her existing family or their future, and she may want to choose a method that is highly effective or permanent. If she is in a stable relationship and may want to conceive at a later date, she may want to use a temporary method. Men's choices for barrier type contraception such as condoms are not among the most effective. Some of the permanent methods of male contraception can be reversed, but the outcome of reversible surgery is not 100%. Options should be discussed with a Urologist to be sure of all available options. When to see a doctor There are many emerging methods of birth control that provide viable options for both men and women. You need to visit your gynecologist or urologist to be sure you have access to all the options available to you.
